Festivals In Amsterdam

Despite being one of the smaller capital cities in Europe, Amsterdam has established itself over the years as one of the prime European destinations for tourists.

Indeed, there are festivals and events throughout the year to suit all tastes – from the rich cultural history of the city to those centred around it’s famous canals – so you’re bound to find something to take your fancy in this fine city.

And with flights to Amsterdam available from most UK airports, travel to the city has never been easier. You could take the ferry of course, but this may involve a little more travelling, and as the streets of Amsterdam are not particularly car-friendly, the best way to experience the city is by bicycle.

Around the time of festivals, particularly at the end of April when Queensday – the Dutch national holiday - takes place. Hotels in Amsterdam will usually be packed with tourists, booking early to avoid disappointment is essential in planning your trip.

Queensday is the national holiday in the Netherlands, and Amsterdam is one of the busiest locations – offering open air music events and a carnival atmosphere to enjoy – the city comes alive with music and markets as thousands descend on the city to celebrate the national holiday.

The city has a rich culture, and this is reflected in a number of festivals throughout the year – from the Capoeira Film Festival to the Amsterdam Roots Festival, which brings together a mix of music and dance from around the world.

Amsterdam is as famous for its nightclub scene as for its museums, and there is a wide variety of clubs to suit all musical tastes – from electro and breakbeat to jazz and stand-up comedy bars. Indeed, each year the 5 Days Off festivals attracts thousands of clubgoers to the city, with some of the world’s top DJs descending upon Amsterdam to enjoy the party atmosphere.

If you’re looking to attend a festival in the city, bear in mind the cost of hotels and the availability of cheap flights to Amsterdam. Booking early can be beneficial to your wallet, giving you more time to decide which bands you fancy seeing whilst there.
